The Joy Ride: Family Fun on the Trail

Largely flat and traffic-free, the Plym Valley Trail is perfect for families with little ones just finding their balance, leisurely riders wanting a gentle pedal, and everyone in between.
A Trail Made for Families
Starting from Coypool Park & Ride, the Plym Valley Trail follows the old railway line through some of Devon's most beautiful countryside. The surface is smooth, the gradients are gentle, and best of all, there's not a car in sight for most of the route.
We regularly see families with children as young as four or five cycling confidently along the trail. The lack of traffic means parents can relax and actually enjoy the ride rather than constantly worrying about safety.
Something for Everyone
One of the best things about the trail is how flexible it is. Want a short ride? Cycle to Plymbridge, explore the woods, and head back – that's about 6 miles round trip. Feeling more adventurous? Continue on to Clearbrook or even Yelverton for a proper day out.
Our e-bikes are perfect for families with mixed abilities. Parents can use the electric assist to keep pace with enthusiastic youngsters, or to help when towing a trailer bike or tag-along. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody gets exhausted.
More Than Just Cycling
The trail passes through Plymbridge Woods, where you can stop to explore, spot wildlife, or just enjoy a picnic. There are cafes at Plymbridge and further along the trail, perfect for ice cream stops that motivate young riders!
We've had families tell us that hiring bikes and exploring the trail has become their favorite weekend activity. It's outdoor exercise that doesn't feel like exercise, quality family time away from screens, and a chance to explore beautiful countryside right on Plymouth's doorstep.
Whether you're locals looking for a new family activity or visitors wanting to see the best of Devon, the Plym Valley Trail offers something special. And we're here to make it as easy as possible – just turn up, hop on a bike, and enjoy!
